Update on H.R. 609

Again, quoting from AACRAO:

As the House opened floor debate this morning on the bill to reauthorize the Higher Education Act, opposition to the legislation gained momentum. The growing list of higher education groups opposing the bill ranges from faith-based college associations to student organizations and faculty groups. Clearly, campus officials are being heard on the Hill: five advocates of the federal transfer mandate in the House issued a "DearColleague" letter to rebut AACRAO's concerns about the transfer provisions, while Rep. Tim Bishop (D-N.Y.) issued a "Dear Colleague" opposing the transfer mandate. In addition, USA Today’s coverage of the bill specifically cited AACRAO's objections to the transfer mandate.

...

At this point, 1,100 AACRAO members have called or emailed their House members to register their opposition to H.R. 609. For those who have not already done so, it is not too late to join your colleagues! The House will resume floor debate on the bill tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. Phone calls and emails between now and tomorrow afternoon will have a significant impact.

And to echo the sentiment of someone I hardly ever agree with, I wonder why UNCG's Carolinian has yet to cover this story. Readers might like to know that this bill will effectively devalue the diplomas they're working so hard to earn. Last February I wondered the same thing about an entirely different issue that also harms students more than they probably realize.
