UNCG's Wireless Project-Phase I Complete

Parking spaces, shmarking spaces. Who needs parking spaces when...uh...UNCG doesn't need wires? Okay, I know I'm reaching. But this surely makes for interesting reading.

Take special note: Wireless laptop computers will be required for freshmen coming in the Fall 2007. So not only will they not have a place to park their cars, not have a room to live in, but at the very least they will have a snazzy new wireless laptop.

Cool, though I wonder about the required laptop thing. I know I've gotten some pretty nasty looks the few times I've brought mine to class, probably because of the noise the keys make when I type. There's that, and then there's the concern about cost. My husband assures me that laptops will probably be 3 or 4 hundred dollars, or less, by the time Fall 2007 rolls around. Which, granted, isn't much for a computer, but is still a heck of a lot when 300 or 400 could make or break your chances of paying your tuition. This isn't, after all, a private school where most of the students have mom and dad paying and/or are receiving healthy scholarships. Public institutions like UNCG have a tendency to catch students from all income levels, and I'd hate to have to be the one to tell a student from the lower income brackets that they can't come to college because they can't afford to buy a laptop, in addition to paying for 4 or 5 hundred dollars worth of textbooks, on top of tuition and housing. I know there's been more than one or two times in my career as a college student that I would have fallen into that category. I hope the university has some kind of contingency plan for situations like that.

I agree, Brandi. That's quite a lofty thing to proclaim. The "digital divide" may not become more apparent than when they institute something like this. I'm kinda/sorta hearing that this is going to be geared more towards students in the Bryan school. I can't think of a reason why students in Dance or our illustrious School of Music might be required to have a laptop. But, yeah, when I read that I thought the exact same things you thought (which is exactly why I posted it here): We already know they're not going to turn people away for not having a laptop; will there be some sort of affordable program to get these incoming Freshman their necessary tools?

Anyway, thanks for dropping by! And your own blogs look great!
